The Monte Rosa, at 4634 metres, is the highest peak in Switzerland! It is a border mountain between Italy and Switzerland. There is hardly a better view of so many 4000 metre peaks in the immediate vicinity, including of course the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.

Meeting point in Zermatt. Take the railway to the Klein Matterhorn - Breithorn (4164m) or Castor (4225m) - Schwarztor - descent via the Schwärzegletscher - ascent to the Neue Monte Rosa hut. Alternative approach via Roter Boden and the Gorner Glacier. Ascent 800 metres, descent 2600 metres; time 6 hours
day 2
Via the Monte Rosa glacier to the "Sattel", here ski depot - via the west ridge (III-) to the Dufourspitze - descent and descent to the Gorner glacier - depending on conditions, optional descent through the Gorner gorge to Zermatt or ascent to the Rotenboden - ski descent or Gornergratbahn to Zermatt. Ascent 1800 metres, descent up to 3000 metres; time 10 hours

Requirements:
- Stamina for ascents of up to 9 hours and descents of up to 2 to 3 hours per day
- Good skiing level & safe skiing in all snow conditions
- Ski touring experience & mastery of hairpin bends
- Sure-footedness & a head for heights
- Safe walking with crampons
- Dealing with emergencies
